Messages Via Carrier Pigeon has been making uncompromising inspirational mosh music since their first gig, January 19th 2008. Cody (vocals), Dan (drums), Brandon (bass) and Phil (guitar/vocals) hope to write songs that millions of fans will sing back to them. Hailing from Sherwood Park in Alberta Canada this hardcore metal band has a heavy tour schedule running until October. Skratch Magazine had the chance to speak to MVCP about the direction of the band and the wrath you face for laughing at their name.
Skratch: What spurs your songwriting?
Dan: We are extremely grateful to be able to
play music. Just the chance to tour, make new friends across the globe and create some memorable albums is enough to get the creative juices flowing.
Phil: And tittie vision, lots of juices flow with tittie vision.
Skratch: Many artists get emotional or passionate about certain topics? What gets you guys going?
Dan: We hope that anyone who reads our lyrics can
immediately recognize the anger, rage and hate that goes into each song. We are very passionate about a wide range of issues.
Phil: Aside from having various subjects inspire us lyrically, seeing the amount of live music that we do really motivates us to be better than the last guy. We are just a bunch of passionate dudes that love to create heavy music and just hope the people who come out and see or listen to it feel the passion. It’s all about what feeling you get from listening.
Skratch: What in your music, differentiates yourselves from other bands?
Dan: We are extremely eclectic within the realm of heavy music. We take influences from grindcore, death/doom/thrash metal, old school hardcore, classic
rock and even some hip-hop. We manage to combine these genres in a smart way that never sounds random and always have a strong, unified structure.
Phil: Not to mention the amount of energy at the live show.
Skratch: What genre do you describe your band as?
Phil: Heavy
Skratch: What is the funniest description you've heard to date?
Dan: Although it’s not really a description I’ll quote the local magazine that wrote something about us. “I thought this was a joke name but these dudes will rape your corpse if’n you giggle.”
Phil: Guess that means it’s heavy, cuz as a lyrical description it couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Skratch: Does anyone have kids in the band?
Dan: No, we can barely take care of ourselves.
Skratch: Who is the mom or dad in the band and why?
Dan: Phil because he is the de facto band leader. He is the most organized of the group so usually it's him telling everyone what's up. Plus he grows a mean beard which is a fatherly trait for sure.
Phil: I think I read in a magazine somewhere an interview with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl who described it best. Something along the lines of you need to have someone at the wheel. If everyone were trying to take the band in different directions all the time it’d be chaos so I mean, we all put that trust in each other when someone says they’re going to do something that they’ll do it. It’s just me who usually gets on dudes if it isn’t done. My face pubes also make me look oldest, so take from that what you will.
Skratch: Lyrically, what are your goals and where is your mind currently?
Dan: Every lyric is written in hopes that some inspired kid will scream it back at Cody some day. We really try to write lyrics that people can comprehend quickly but still have deep meanings that people can attach too. We do write personal lyrics but hopefully anyone who reads them
can take something out of the lines and apply it to their own lives.
Skratch: Do you have a need or desire to be signed in the future?
Dan: Desire – Yes. Need – No.
Skratch: Where are your favorite cities or states to play music in and just to play in?
Dan: It's hard to beat an old fashioned hometown show. We have a great scene in Edmonton with lots of bands and kids getting stoked on music and coming together. We are lucky to be so far North but still have tons of great touring artists come visit so the scene is really strong thanks to all the out of town influence. Plus we love playing to our family are friends.
Phil: I know we have never played in the states anywhere, but those kids just fuckin’ lose it and I’d be down to see that eruption happen.
Skratch: What would one expect when seeing your live show?
Phil: The one thing we can guarantee is regardless of the turnout you will see us at our best. It definitely helps and makes things a lot more fun when kids start getting into it, but we will trying “rape your corpse” no matter what.
Skratch: Any magical rituals or beverages before your live show you care to share with us?
Phil: Gotsta have a pre-game poop, assuming the facility accommodates such a thing.
Skratch: Would you ever sell the rights to your music for a commercial or TV show?
Dan: No, we’re not Moby.
Skratch: What’s your favourite TV show now?
Dan: Anything on Food Network.
Phil: And of course, tittie vision.
Skratch: Any special love interests?
Dan: Kids in the front row
Skratch: Your next live show is?
Dan: With a Textbook Tragedy
Skratch: Last words/final thoughts/Anything you would like readers to know about you?
Brandon: When you think you might freeze to death, never try jerking off to keep warm. I knew a guy once (Karl - RIP) who was found in his truck, frozen to death, with his dick in his hands. He had to wait for a tow truck and thought it was a good idea. Go figure.
