Interview — The Spurts!

Skratch Magazine

The Spurts! are a blend of punk meets doo-wop making for candied poison apple guitar riffs that practically guarantee a sugar high. Collin (guitar/vocals), Matt (vocals/guitar), Josh (bass/vocal), and Luke (drums/vocals) are from Santa Cruz, California and though claim to have dated for 4 years, they’ve only officially been a band of two years.

Skratch: Give me an idea of what one would expect from your live show.

C: Walking away in bliss though you wet your pants from excitement
J: A lot of sweaty guys jumping around giving you a boner.
M: GG Allin poetry reading.
L: Just a really energetic fun rock and roll show.

Skratch: What do you guys do off the stage?

C: Were all best friends and hang out all the time anyways, Josh and Matt live together, so you'll most likely find us with a beer in our hands doing exactly what we do on stage. Josh he only chills with his homie Jay Owen though.

Skratch: Where do you enjoy touring?

J: We all love the northwest, lots of awesome bands and good friends up there. But we enjoy being on the road in general. Anytime we leave our day to day monotony its a blast, anywhere that'll welcome us.

Skratch: Any good stories?

M: Once after a show in Seattle Josh and I exposed ourselves to a full dance club and then kidnapped a tranny Canadian and took him on a four hour adventure on the streets of capitol hill.
C: The last time we went down to southern California we left a party in attempts to sleep in the van, realized there was 10 of us and no room so we opted to sleep next to the parking garage that the van was in. What we realized when we woke up was that we had all bummed it out in the cold in a bamboo forest. There were bamboo trees all around but we were still totally exposed to the road, looking like hobo's.

Skratch: What are you favorite two lyric lines from your recent songs? Tell me a little about them.

J: "I wanna rock and roll with you all night and flip you over and try your B side" That's from a song I wrote about a radio DJ, I think the line is pretty self explanatory.
M: "My baby's got me stuck on cunt." um... it's about friendship!!!

Skratch: What other special talents do you guys have aside from music? Any hobbies?

M: Nothing. Really nothing. Wow.
C: I'm actually a 3 time world champion tech deck skateboarder (finger skateboards) once in 2000, then again in 02 and 03. 01 was a tough year with some mishaps I don't want to talk about it. I went all the way to Germany in 04 but broke my fingers getting my luggage at the airport.

Skratch: Any secret crushes you care to divulge?

M: Morgan Freeman
C: Aunt Jemimah, she ALWAYS fills my waffle pockets
L: Sara Berellas I'll write her a love song... maybe after I figure out how to spell her name
J: Katie Damon

Skratch :Politically, where does the band stand?

All: Were from California, what do think. Kindergarten Cop.

Skratch: Aside from being a "rockstar", what are your day jobs? What are your goals?

J: I work for Amazon, doing media ingestion, yep punk kid in an office I know...
L: I work for a solar panel installation company called POCO. I pretty much run around on roofs all day.
M/C: Song Writers
All: Goals? Have you heard of 2012.

Skratch: When all is said and done, how do you want to be remembered as a band and as people?

M: I just want somebody to write my biography. And I want it to be 800 pages.
C: I would like some kid somewhere in the future or now to be inspired by our music and by what we're doing enough that they go out and start there own scene, like Slaughter and the Dogs and 999 did for me.
J: As a person I don't want to be remembered I just want people to talk about that dude that was really sweaty but rocked the bass.
L: Crunkdy Dumpdty. Baked goods been givin' me wood.

Skratch: Who in the band is more likely to be a pyromaniac, a teacher, and/or a Olympic swimmer?

M: Collin is definitely the pyro of the band.
J/L: Yeah.
C: Luke is most likely to be a teacher because he loves to rant about bullshit.
L: Josh for the Olympic swimmer because he's like one step away from a seal, and I do love ranting about retarded things

Skratch: Last words/final thoughts/Anything you would like readers to know about you?:

C: We have our full length album done and were hoping to release it in early spring, so any labels/ distributors, anyone that is interested in a hard working fun loving rock and roll band please let us know we are currently unsigned and have no help.
M: We love to tour so anyone anywhere let us know if you want us in your town and well ad you to the next one.
J: If you want to contact us hit us up on the myspace. www.myspace.com/thespurtsrockroll or pivy1977@yahoo.com.
L: We want to be showered in money and bitches so make us famous
