Dryver is metal plain and simple. Well maybe not simple considering Jake Martin (vocals), Colbey Schnelle (guitar/vocals), Ty DenHartog (guitar), Dylan Sielicki (bass) and Ryan Holland (drums) all agree their sound is most akin to that of a shot of Tequila and a big pair of tits. Sure beats the sound of ne hand clapping. Here’s what else they had to say to Skratch Magazine.
Skratch: How did you become interested in music?
Dryver: Music is where all of us went when there was nowhere else to go. We decided to stay there.
Skratch: What artists or musicians inspire you?
Dryver: Metallica, Sound Garden, Alice n’ Chains, Deftones, Primus, Tool
Skratch: Where do you take musical inspiration from?
Dryver: It’s always there. The places we’ve all been individually have given us a lot of lessons to express. Like many musicians we get a lot of inspiration by clearing our heads. Whether it be up hiking at our local mountain snowboarding, or just sittin in our room by ourselves playin our instruments for hours. Basically whatever works for us to simplify our lives in order to stay creative.
Skratch: What is your musical background?
Dryver: We’ve all been in a lot of musical projects and bands in the past, and learned a lot of lessons on the way. We like the maturity that we’ve gained from it and we all feel like we’re in the “right place” currently.
Skratch: Tell us about how you got started as a band.
Dryver: We’ve all known each other either personally or from our local music scene and the culmination of our band was created due to our mutual availability. After we all got in a room together, and plugged in our equipment. What you hear is the sound we started.
Skratch: What is the most rewarding part of playing in a band?
Dryver: The best part is that we’re all friends. We have a relationship and bond that none of us have ever experienced in a band before which is great. So it’s a close one between that, and the live show experience. We all love playing live. When crowds get stoked from the sound we’re making on stage it’s really motivating.
Skratch: What challenges have you faced as musicians?
Dryver: It’s a struggle. You have to go into the music scene knowing that it’s a huge uphill battle. Sacrifices, disappointments, and a hustle that seems to pay off a lot less than it seems that it should.
Skratch: What would you say is your best song to date? Why?
Dryver: That song hasn’t been written. So far our best song always seems to be the newest one we have.
Skratch; Do you remember the first album you ever bought? What was it?
Dryver: Queen- “We will Rock You” single, Soungarden “Super Unknown”, Metallica “Kill em’ All”, Silverchair “Frogstomp”, Bruce Springsteen “Born in the USA”.
Skratch: Where do you see your band in five years?
Dryver: Everywhere!
Skratch: Would you say your goals as a band are long term, or short term? What do you ultimately hope to achieve? Explain.
Dryver: Long term. Success.
Skratch: How has your band evolved since when you first formed?
Dryver: We got more speakers. Lol.
Skratch: How often do you practice? What is your rehearsal time like?
Dryver: 3 or more nights a week, 3 plus hours a night. We run through our set twice and then work on new music.
Skratch: What would you say is your band’s motto? Explain.
Dryver: Straight balls!
Skratch: What shows/album releases/plans do you currently have set up? Tell us about them.
Dryver: Live TV video shoot, Westcoast tour, shopping our EP, getting more sponsors, developing new merchandise and writing new music.
Skratch: Where have your performed? Tell us about the experience.
Dryver: Back of a brand new Civic........the away team cheerleader! Honorable mention!
Skratch: What sets your stage show a part from all the other bands making the rounds at venues?
Dryver: Energy and deep knee rock squats!
Skratch: Anything else you think we should know about the band?
Dryver: We all understand that music is about havin fun and being creative. We work really hard to write good music that a lot of people can appreciate.
