Punk/Alternative band Pretty Face 4 Radio is based out of Boston starring drummer-turned-one-man-show, Kyle Carey, as the face. But Carey is more than just a pretty face. Check out what he had to say to Skratch Magazine.
Skratch: Describe your sound:
PF4R: It’s like a pop punk song with catchy guitars and choruses with a kick of some badass heavier parts here and there.
Skratch: How did you become interested in music?
PF4R: It started when I was probably like 5 when my Dad used to blast U2 in the car and I guess it just caught on ever since.
Skratch: What is your song writing process like?
PF4R: I’ll pick up the guitar and jam for hours at a time until I find a catchy riff that I like and then mix in the bass and drums and finalize the music, then write all the lyrics while I’m standing behind the microphone. I can’t just sit and write words down, my attention span for that is not even close to enough.
Skratch: What artists or musicians inspire you?
PF4R: Well my favorite band is definitely Foo Fighters, but my style derives from Paramore and Blink-182 mostly.
Skratch: Where do you take musical inspiration from? Your environment?
People? Explain.
PF4R: I honestly don’t know where my inspiration comes from at all. The ideas I get just kind of pop into my head and I’m like “ok cool, that would be a sick song.”
Skratch: What is your musical background?
PF4R: I’m originally a drummer and I have been playing those for about 8 years now and I go to Berklee College of Music for them. Being a drummer though, you can’t really write much so I picked up the guitar and just taught myself enough to get me by for now and singing and bass just followed along with the guitar.
Skratch: Tell us about how you got started as a band.
PF4R: I actually decided to go for it when I made a song for fun for one of my best friends and I ended up getting a lot of positive feedback that I didn’t expect at all. Now it’s the only thing I can see myself doing.
Skratch: What is the most rewarding part of playing in a band?
PF4R: The best part is easily the feeling of showing people a new song. I’m all about trying to give people a kick-ass soundtrack to their life because we all know we have those.
Skratch: What challenges have you faced as musicians?
PF4R: The biggest challenge for me is probably getting the money I need for promotions and navigating through the copyright office website because it’s horrendous.
Skratch: What would you say is your best song to date? Why?
PF4R: I’m not sure if it’s my best, but I will always love the song “Girl from L.A.” only because it was my first song ever.
Skratch: Do you remember the first album you ever bought? What was it?
PF4R: It was “Tubthumper” by Chumbawamba and it was epic.
Skratch: Where do you see your band in five years?
PF4R: I see myself opening for Paramore on a national tour.
Skratch:: Would you say your goals as a band are long term, or short term? What do you ultimately hope to achieve? Explain.
PF4R: My goals technically should be considered long term, but I’m not wasting any time and I believe these are now short-term goals. I ultimately hope to be signed to a specific punk label in Japan and have a career overseas.
Skratch: How has your band evolved since when you first formed?
PF4R: I’ve only been an official “band” for a short amount of time so I have not really formed drastically since then.
Skratch: How often do you practice? What is your rehearsal time like?
PF4R: Every second of free time is about the music.
Skratch: What would you say is your band's motto? Explain.
PF4R: “You play loud. I play louder.” You’re going to run into those bands and those guys that are better and your confidence starts to sink, but you just have to ignore it and not let anything get in the way. Make yourself known and stand behind that microphone and sing louder than the world.
Skratch: What shows/album releases/plans do you currently have set up? Tell us about them.
PF4R: I recently received an offer from the channel HDNet. They want to use my song “Enemy” for a Pay-Per View headliner song.
Skratch: Where have your preformed? Tell us about the experience.
PF4R: I haven’t performed yet, I gotta promote my ass first.
Skratch: Anything else you think we should know about the band?
PF4R: Pretty Face 4 Radio will see the world and the world will see Pretty Face 4 Radio.
